A Poem
A young girl sits alone in a chair
And wonders why you were not there
To meet here when she came home from school
As you always did, as a rule
She wonders why you’re not at home
Why you left her all alone
She wonders where you have hidden, out of sight
She wonders why her grandma cries every night
The girl wonders why the house is so quiet
Why grandma threw out the bottles from the cabinet
She finally asks her grandma to explain
What she meant when she said that you will never be home again
Her grandma’s eyes water as she takes a great sigh
Then burst into tears as she says you have died
That as you were walking home from a play, on the East Side
You were hit by a car, a man who decided to Drink and Drive
Her grandma gives the girl a hug and says
I’ll be here for you as long as I live
But I will never be able to fill the hole left by your father and mother
But we can try to work through our loss together
The little girl does not understand her grandma fully
But she will remember the words and hugs back gratefully
She knows that life will never be what it once was
She knows now...you are forever gone
